Togo has unveiled a new visa-free policy for citizens of all African countries, enabling them to visit the nation for up to 30 days without the need for a visa. This initiative, which took effect on May 18, is designed to bolster regional integration and enhance tourism, trade, and business prospects across Africa. The move is part of Togo’s strategic efforts to foster greater mobility, cooperation, and economic opportunities within the continent.
Despite the removal of visa requirements, African travelers must still comply with immigration, security, and public health protocols. As part of the entry process, visitors are obligated to complete a travel declaration on a government platform at least 24 hours before arrival to secure the necessary entry documentation. This measure ensures that while the borders are more open, safety and compliance standards are maintained.
The Togolese government has emphasized that this policy reflects its ambition to transform the country into a central hub for mobility and economic activity in Africa. Officials are optimistic that the visa-free entry will attract a diverse range of individuals, including investors, entrepreneurs, skilled professionals, and tourists, thereby fortifying the country’s regional economic connections. The initiative is closely aligned with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to ease travel restrictions and promote economic unity across the continent.
This policy is a component of Togo’s broader plan to establish Lomé, the capital city, as a pivotal center for trade, investment, and services in West Africa. By facilitating increased movement of people, Togo joins a growing list of African nations, such as Rwanda, Ghana, and Benin, that have implemented similar measures to stimulate economic cooperation and integration. This trend highlights a wider continental effort to unite Africa’s markets and enhance cross-border collaboration.
