Residents in several parts of Johannesburg should prepare for a day without electricity this Saturday, as a planned power outage is set to disrupt services due to essential maintenance work. The outage, aimed at improving the reliability of the city’s electricity network, will affect areas supplied by the Orlando Switching Station and the Mayfair Substation.

The power interruption at the Orlando Switching Station is scheduled to occur from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, impacting Nobel Street, Industria North, Bunsen Street, Slovo Crosby No. 1 and 2, Industria West, Bosmond Maraisburg, Maraisburg Road, and Vegr Street Feeder Nos. 1, 2, and 3, including Lowenthal. Residents in these areas are advised to make necessary arrangements to cope with the eight-hour power cut.

Meanwhile, the Mayfair Substation will experience a slightly longer outage, from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. This will affect the neighborhoods of Mayfair, Crown, Amalgam, Amalgam Standby, and Vredepark. The scheduled maintenance is crucial for ensuring a more reliable supply of electricity in the future, despite the temporary inconvenience it poses.

City officials have urged residents in the affected zones to plan accordingly and ensure that they have adequate resources to manage during the outage period. This maintenance work is part of a broader effort to upgrade and maintain the aging infrastructure, which is vital for sustaining the growing energy demands of Johannesburg.

The planned maintenance and resulting power cuts highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining a stable electricity supply in urban areas, where the demand for energy continues to rise. Residents are encouraged to use this time to prepare for future disruptions as the city works toward a more robust and reliable electricity network.
