South African motorists may soon experience another increase in fuel prices this September, according to the latest data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), which suggests that costs for petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin are on the rise. The projections indicate that 93 petrol could see an increase of about 83 cents per litre, while 95 petrol might go up by 94 cents. Diesel prices are anticipated to climb more steeply, with a potential rise of approximately R2.87 per litre for 0.05% diesel and R3.07 for 0.005% diesel. Additionally, illuminating paraffin could increase by around R2.24 per litre.
The price surge in diesel is of particular concern due to its extensive use across multiple sectors such as freight, agriculture, construction, and mining. A significant hike in diesel prices could lead to higher transportation and operational expenses, which might consequently exert upward pressure on food and consumer goods prices.
Although the outlook has improved slightly since early August—when petrol was expected to increase by about R1 per litre and diesel faced potential hikes of nearly R5 per litre—the current figures still indicate that fuel prices are under considerable upward pressure. This is largely influenced by international oil prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate. Despite the rand showing some resilience, the rise in global petroleum prices continues to contribute to the under-recovery of fuel costs.
It is important to note that the figures provided by the CEF are indicative and could change before the final adjustments are announced. Motorists and businesses alike should prepare for the new fuel prices, which are expected to come into effect on 1 September 2026.
