This recognition solidifies the country’s position as a premier choice for those seeking nature and safari experiences. Conducted among 2,400 travelers from 12 countries, the survey revealed that 72% of participants consider wildlife encounters a significant factor when selecting a holiday destination.
The survey also highlighted a notable surge in interest for wildlife holidays, with online searches for this type of travel increasing by 211% over the past year. While Australia claimed the top spot in the ranking, South Africa’s impressive second-place finish positioned it ahead of renowned wildlife destinations like Kenya, Canada, and China. The country’s diverse ecosystems and rich biodiversity remain a major draw for tourists eager to experience activities ranging from Big Five safaris to whale watching, birding, and interactions with African penguins.
The findings underscore a shift in travel preferences, as more tourists are opting for immersive nature experiences instead of traditional sightseeing tours. This trend reflects a growing desire among travelers to connect with the natural world in meaningful ways. On a global scale, the survey identified the giant panda as the most sought-after animal that travelers wish to see in the wild. This was followed by elephants, kangaroos, koalas, and whales. Notably, within Africa’s famous Big Five, the elephant was the only species to make it into the global top five, further highlighting its appeal to wildlife enthusiasts around the world.
