Ramaphosa Weighs Reinstating Police Chief After Charges Dropped

by admin477351

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is weighing the potential reinstatement of suspended national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola after the withdrawal of criminal charges against him. The charges, which were related to alleged violations of the Public Finance Management Act concerning a healthcare tender awarded to Medicare24 Tshwane District, were formally dropped in a Pretoria magistrate’s court.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced its decision after determining that the evidence did not present a reasonable prospect of securing a successful prosecution against Masemola. This conclusion was based on a comprehensive review by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, supported by reports from a case assessment panel and independent legal counsel.

Despite the withdrawal of the charges, the NPA clarified that Masemola’s suspension remains in effect until President Ramaphosa makes a separate decision regarding his return to the role of national police commissioner. The president acknowledged the NPA’s decision but indicated that deliberations on Masemola’s suspension are still ongoing.

General Masemola has expressed his readiness to resume his duties in light of the legal development. However, the broader criminal investigation concerning the Medicare24 contract persists, targeting other individuals implicated in alleged corruption and irregularities linked to the tender process.
